This morning Bobo was having a hard time finding something to engage himself in. He has a Little Tykes train, that he has only been lukewarm about. I took a handful of ugly plastic handles I kept from when I replaced the door handles in our kitchen. Don't ask me why I saved them, but I did. Anyway, Bobo really responds to the idea of utility. If I stacked up the handles on the train, he could see that the train could do something useful. Once that is true, the train has much more fascination for him. The shreaking monkey that sits on top of the train... Bobo knows intutively that hauling shrinking monkeys is not why trains exist. Perhaps Bobo is like the "dosers" on Fraggle Rock, but, really, I suspect most of us want to do something that has utility, something that is useful.
