It turns out that the batteries in the Norelco 6886XL shaver are simply NiCad AA batteries. I had some extra from some solar Malibu lights, and they work fine. It is quite tricky soldering them. If you have skill at soldering, make sure you preserve the metal tabs that hook to the old batteries by prying carefully with a thin blade. Put a little solder on the new battery and the old tabs, first, then put the new batteries in. An alternative to this is to buy NiCad batteries with tabs already on them from here. They have batteries and other shaver parts for all kinds of Norelco shavers.
