The regular old kitchen sponge is the worst harborer of bacteria. I started bleaching the kitchen sponges because they stink, and make my hands stink as well. It only takes a few days for the sponge to go bad, and it seems silly to throw it away. I did some research, and my thoughts were confirmed here. This article recommends a solution of 1 Tbs of bleach to a gallon of water for porous surfaces, and to change out your bleach solution every one or two days. I already wash the cutting boards in the dishwasher. Ikea has very thin cutting boards that fit in the dishwasher quite easily. I will bleach the countertops and sponge daily with the bleach solution, and that should cut down on the bacteria a bit in the kitchen. Really, some of the stories about sponges are pretty nasty, if you go searching for them.
